How to Maintain Your Granite Surface Plate for Years

Granite surface plates are a crucial foundation for precision measurement, and with proper care, they can last for decades — maintaining their flatness and accuracy over time. However, even the most durable granite plate can degrade without proper maintenance.

Why Maintenance Matters

Granite is highly stable, corrosion-resistant, and hard-wearing — but it’s not indestructible.
Dust, wear, thermal exposure, and accidental impacts can all affect accuracy.

Regular maintenance ensures:

  • Consistent measurement precision
  • Extended surface plate lifespan
  • Reduced need for re-lapping and recalibration

1. Daily Cleaning Routine

Granite plates must be kept clean to maintain accuracy and protect against surface wear.

Use:
  • A lint-free microfiber cloth
  • Approved granite plate cleaner or isopropyl alcohol
  • Avoid water, soap, or harsh chemicals
Procedure:
  1. Wipe down the surface before and after each use
  2. Remove dust, grease, and metal particles
  3. Let the plate dry completely before use

2. Prevent Surface Damage

Protect the surface from scratches, dents, or accidental misuse.

Do:
  • Use dedicated tools for the granite plate only
  • Cover the surface when not in use
  • Ensure fixtures and workpieces are clean before placing
Don’t:
  • Use granite plates as workbenches or for heavy hammering
  • Slide metal tools across the surface
  • Lean on the plate — body heat can affect micro-accuracy

3. Control Environmental Conditions

Granite is stable — but it still reacts to extreme environmental changes.

Maintain:
  • Stable room temperature (ideally 20°C ±1°C)
  • Low humidity to avoid moisture absorption
  • Placement away from direct sunlight or machinery heat
