Granite plate, granite slab, granite surface table, granite stand — spend enough time reading supplier catalogs or technical literature in precision metrology and you’ll run into all of these terms, sometimes used for the same object and sometimes for genuinely…
Levelling jacks rarely get much attention compared to the surface plate they support, but they play a direct role in whether the plate actually performs to its rated accuracy. A perfectly flat, correctly calibrated plate can still produce misleading measurements…
Granite surface plates are so common today that it’s easy to forget they’re a relatively recent development. For most of the history of precision machining, surface plates were made almost exclusively of cast iron. That wasn’t an arbitrary choice —…
If you’ve come across both “surface table” and “surface plate” used to describe what looks like the same flat reference block, you’re not imagining things. The two terms are used almost interchangeably across the metrology and machining world, but the…
A surface plate drawing can look intimidating at first glance — a rectangle, a handful of symbols, and a string of numbers that don’t mean much unless you know the notation. But once you understand what each element represents, reading…
Anyone who has spent time around a metrology lab or toolroom has heard the word “datum” thrown around, usually without much explanation. It sounds abstract, but the idea behind it is simple: before you can measure anything accurately, you need…
Aerospace and defense manufacturing operates in a different accuracy regime from general precision engineering. Where a tool room accepts 10-micrometre flatness tolerance, an aerospace engine component inspection requires a reference surface accurate to 2 to 5 micrometres. Where a production…
India’s granite surface plate market covers a wide quality range – from precision-lapped, NABL-certified Grade AA plates made from verified black granite to ungraded polished stone slabs sold as surface plates with no flatness documentation. The visual difference between these…
Both instruments measure height from a surface plate datum – and buyers frequently treat them as interchangeable. They are not. Each solves a different measurement problem. Selecting the wrong one introduces either unnecessary cost, measurement inconsistency, or both. This comparison…
A precision inspection station does not require a full climate-controlled metrology room. Most Indian Tier-2 suppliers and precision engineering SMEs achieve excellent measurement results from a well-planned inspection corner – a dedicated area equipped with the right reference equipment and…
